Dixie Canyon Avenue School is located in beautiful Sherman Oaks, California. We are an SSC school (our shared leadership council)
and we follow the LEARN calendar. We have a staff of approximately 90 and a student body of about 650. We don't like to brag (much),
but we do have LOTS to boast about at Dixie!
In addition to our exemplary general education program, we also have an extensive special education program with an LD class, a pre-school program, upper ED and upper aphasia classes. Special inclusion is something we feel strongly about at Dixie, and we have over 20 kids mainstreamed into the general classroom environment. Thanks to the dedication of our incredible staff, we are designated an SAS school (School for Advanced Studies). The majority of our teachers have received many hours of training in differentiated and gifted education and we have one SAS class at grades 3, 4, and 5. All teachers differentiate their curriculum based on the individual needs of their students. In addition, we have special programs for students gifted in the visual and performing arts. Dixie has always been very proud of our superb performing Theatre Arts program, under the leadership of "Drama Sue" Robinson. And to insure that Art remains a part of the curriculum here at Dixie for every student, we have a Visual Arts program under the direction of Kathy Barbro! Our community and Dixie parents rose to the challenge this summer by raising funds to meet the matching technology grant challenge from the Friedman Foundation. The great news is the Computer Lab headed by Jack Wills, Computer Professional Expert, will receive new equipment this year and all of our children will benefit! We have a fantastic physical education program with STAR. You'll find our students on the playground enjoying P.E. and our two playgrounds that were provided by the Anne & Kirk Douglas grant, AND don't forget to check out our recently renovated Wonder Of Reading Library! STAR is also available for afterschool childcare and diverse enrichment programs. Dramaworks is another option for afterschool enrichment programs as well as musical productions in the Fall and Spring. Click on the program tabs in the navigation bar to learn more. Our real claim to fame at Dixie is that we have the best teachers in the world! It must be something in the water that attracts talent, because we guarantee to give any private school a run for their money.
