Dixie Canyon Avenue School MUSIC PROGRAM
Mrs. Terri Walsh, music specialist

The Vocal Music Program for Dixie Canyon involves every grade level in meaningful, enriching and fun activities based on California State Music Standards.

During weekly 30 minute sessions students explore beautiful singing, creative movement and dance, rhythmic, melodic and harmonic note reading and production, instrument playing, partner and group singing and movement games, creative improvisation and listening lessons in a variety of styles and musical genres. Specific areas of study such as math times tables and history curriculum in the classroom are enriched by musical or creative activities. Each class not only learns how to do music, they rehearse and practice hard to truly know the songs and dances at performance level, which prepares then for both the Winter Concert and Diversity Day Celebration!

We are excited about the great work that the students accomplish and hope to add more classes in the near future to provide music to a broader base of students. Because music learning is sequential, the years of training add up and children really reap the benefits of having consistent music lessons year after year. Music learning also provides a much needed break from the regular routine for the students and classroom teachers.

Classroom teachers are encouraged to learn the songs, dances and activities along with the students and practice them on days without the music teacher as time allows. Dixie is such a creative school with extremely talented children, the more music the better! In short, Dixie's students are musical and are doing well with the music!!!
